The Washington Nationals inked a deal with local ice cream chain Gifford’s Ice Cream and Candy to serve sweet treats at the team’s new ballpark through 2011. The chain, which opened its first store in Silver Spring, Md., in 1938 will have a branded concession stand on the main concourse. The ice cream business is also creating the"Dinger,"a vanilla ice cream and chocolate cookie sandwich to be sold throughout the ballpark. A portion of the sale of each confection will be donated to the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation. The foundation has committed to building a diabetes pediatric care center and a baseball academy. The company has four stores throughout the D.C. metro area, in Bethesda, Chevy Chase and Rockville, Md., along with downtown D.C.
Small Business on Capitol Hill (and Beyond)
Here is the Small Business blog’s monthly roundup of legislation, regulation and other government activity affecting small businesses: Senate Democratic leaders postponed action until next week on the much talked about plan intended to stimulate the nation’s economy. The version agreed to by House legislators includes several provisions applauded by the small business community, such as a dollar amount for expensing limits, which would allow small-business owners to immediately write off business purchases. The Senate version also includes language addressing expensing and an increase in the net operating loss carry-back period. The broader House and Senate bills differ significantly and the chambers still must hammer out their differences. The House and Senate approved a bill, H.R. 4253 to help veterans and military reservists keep their small firms afloat during and after deployment. The measure increases funding for a Small Business Administration office overseeing veterans’issues, among other things. The bill

Healthcare costs are a perennial burden for small businesses and a new poll released today finds that 77 percent of small business owners do not offer health insurance to their employees. More than half of respondents said obtaining affordable health insurance for employees was very difficult. Survey results also showed that: *40 percent of employers who offer healthcare coverage have considered discontinuing it because of its high cost; *34 percent of small business owners said employees go without health insurance; *25 percent of small business owners said they are uninsured - an increase from 18 percent who said the same last year; *Among small business owners who have healthcare coverage, 27 percent are insured by another family member’s plan, while 35 percent
The Impact of Immigration on Hiring
Small business owners need to pay attention to immigration issues and closely scrutinize data offered by new hires to avoid suffering damages to their workforce, according to a panel of experts speaking at a conference Monday hosted by the National Association of Women Business Owners. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement office of the Homeland Security Department is focused on businesses dealing in construction, manufacturing, meatpacking, retailers and temporary placement agencies, among others, said immigration lawyer Nicole Lawrence Ezer."No one is safe at this point unless you’re certain your I-9s are in order,"she said. I-9s or"Employment Eligibility Verification"forms are required to be filed by all companies with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. A new version of the I-9 (pdf) went into effect in January. The major change on the revised form eliminates five documents from a list of acceptable documents that would allow an individual to be
